Kenwood DPX-5200M

デュアルサイズMD/CDレシーバー: Kenwood put MD ahead of CD in this deck's own name, and the numbers back the ordering up: the MiniDisc transport posts 0.005% distortion against the CD section's 0.01%, and it reads MDLP, so LP2 and LP4 discs play and light their own indicators. The real surprise is the equaliser. Set EQ mode to Pro and you get a three band parametric, with selectable centre frequency, adjustable Q factor and level on each band, plus three memory slots to store curves in. Parametric control on a mid-shelf 2-DIN is not something the spec sheet shouts about. Add 47W x 4, pre-outs you can switch between non-fader, front or rear, a navigation mute, a security code, and a panel that drops down to swallow the disc. Both formats working, and more tuning control than decks well above it.

Equaliser Two modes. Easy gives genre preset curves. Pro gives a three band parametric: bass centred at 60, 70, 80, 100 or 150 Hz with Q of 1.0 to 2.0 and a bass extension switch, mid at 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2 kHz with Q of 1.0 or 2.0, and treble at 10, 12.5, 15 or 17.5 kHz, each adjustable plus or minus 12 dB, with three storable memories
MD spec GaAlAs laser diode (780 nm), 1-bit D/A with 8x oversampling, 400 to 900 rpm CLV, 20 Hz–20 kHz (plus or minus 1 dB), THD 0.005% (1 kHz), S/N 90 dB, dynamic range 90 dB, separation 85 dB, wow and flutter below measurable limits
CD spec GaAlAs laser diode (780 nm), 1-bit D/A with 8x oversampling, 500 to 200 rpm CLV, 10 Hz–20 kHz (plus or minus 1 dB), THD 0.01% (1 kHz), S/N 93 dB, dynamic range 93 dB, separation 85 dB, wow and flutter below measurable limits
Traffic information (TI) Hold the button for a second from any source and the tuner jumps straight to Japan's AM road traffic broadcast, switchable between 1620, 1629 and 522 kHz, then back again. This is the Japanese highway radio service, not an RDS data feed, so it is of no use outside Japan
Convenience Navigation voice mute, security code, attenuator, auto antenna support, name presets for up to 10 discs and 30 radio stations, and title and text auto scroll with a 13 step display dimmer
Expansion CD and MD changer control, up to two changers with the optional KCA-S210A switching unit, which also provides the AUX input alongside the CA-C1AX adapter
Remote support Supports a wireless remote, so you can even add one to control it from across the cabin
Electrical 14.4V nominal (11 to 16V operating), 10A maximum draw
Form factor Double DIN (2-DIN), 178 x 100 x 155 mm, approx. 2.3 kg
