Alpine MDA-W955J
MD&CD 2DINワンボディ — Alpine built the MDA-W955J in 2001 for people who were going to add an outboard processor anyway, and then didn't leave them a reason to. Inside is a full active dividing network — a crossover ahead of the amplifiers, switchable 2-way or 3-way, with HPF and LPF cutoffs in third-octave steps, slopes from 6 to 24 dB/oct and level trim on every band — plus six-channel time correction covering both subwoofer outputs, a 7-band graphic EQ, and Alpine's DHE harmonics processor, whose five modes exist specifically to put back what ATRAC takes out of a MiniDisc. Then there's the party piece: a Customized Sound Database holding around 230 Japanese cars. Tell it you're in a particular chassis, what size your front speakers are, whether you've got separate tweeters, whether there's a sub, and whether the seats are cloth or leather — it sets the cabin acoustics for you. 45W × 4, front and rear pre-outs, Ai-NET for changers, motorised tilting display, remote in the box. The most over-engineered thing in the cabinet, and it knows it.

| Tuner | FM/AM — FM 76.0–90.0 MHz (Japan domestic band), AM 522–1,629 kHz. FM sensitivity 0.8 µV/75 Ω (9.3 dBf, new IHF), S/N ≥80 dB, stereo separation ≥45 dB, image and IF rejection ≥80 dB. AM sensitivity 22.5 µV |
| Power | 45W × 4 max output, front and rear pre-outs at 500 mV / 10 kΩ |
| Crossover | Active dividing network ahead of the amps — 2-way / 3-way selectable on a rear switch. HPF/LPF cutoffs in 1/3-octave steps (20–200 Hz low range, 20 Hz–20 kHz mid and high), slope FLAT / 6 / 12 / 18 / 24 dB/oct, level 0 to −12 dB per band, subwoofer phase select. Using the divider locks out the surround modes — they share the same DSP |
| Time correction | Manual TCR across six channels — front L/R, rear L/R and subwoofer L/R — adjustable 0.0–20.0 with three stored presets |
| DSP / EQ | 7-band graphic EQ at 63 / 160 / 400 Hz, 1 / 2.5 / 6.3 / 16 kHz. Surround fields (Normal, Dance, Hall, Stadium) with level and time ±4, listening position (All / Front-All / Front-L / Front-R), and DHE Digital Harmonics Enhancer with three bass modes, a vocal mode and an all-round mode. Six user presets |
| Customized Sound Database | Approx. 230 Japanese vehicle models on board — select your car, front speaker diameter, separate tweeters, subwoofer and seat material (cloth or leather), and the deck configures the cabin acoustics automatically |
| CD spec | Optical pickup, 1-bit quantisation, 2-channel, 5 Hz–20 kHz (±1 dB), dynamic range ≥93 dB (1 kHz), S/N ≥105 dB (1 kHz), channel separation ≥86 dB, wow & flutter below measurable limits |
| MD spec | 20 Hz–20 kHz (±0.5 dB), dynamic range ≥90 dB (1 kHz), S/N ≥105 dB (1 kHz), wow & flutter below measurable limits |
