Kenwood M909

The Kenwood M909 is a single-DIN receiver with a MiniDisc transport and an FM/AM tuner. The manual carries publication number B64-1334-00. Its mounting dimensions are 178 x 50 x 160 mm with a mass of 1.7 kg, so despite a fascia that presents at double-DIN scale it occupies a single-DIN aperture. The specification lists no CD section.

The MiniDisc transport uses a GaAlAs double-hetero laser diode at 780 nm with an eight times oversampling digital filter and a 1-bit digital-to-analogue converter, running at 400 -> 900 rpm under constant linear velocity. Frequency response is 20 Hz -> 20 kHz within plus or minus 1 dB, with 0.01 percent distortion at 1 kHz, 93 dB signal-to-noise, 90 dB dynamic range and 85 dB stereo separation. Wow and flutter is below measurable limits.

Sound adjustment is a two-band tone control at 100 Hz and 10 kHz, each across plus or minus 10 dB. No multi-band equaliser or DSP section appears in the specification.

Output is rated at 28W x 4 into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 10 percent THD with a maximum of 44W x 4. The specification gives a pre-out impedance of 600 ohm or less but no pre-out level. A remote control is listed among the supplied parts, alongside the power harness, four truss screws and one bind screw.
