Kenwood DPX-6021M

The Kenwood DPX-6021M is a double-DIN receiver with MiniDisc and CD transports and an FM/AM tuner. It is the entry model of a three-unit family documented in publication B64-2003-00, below the DPX-8021Mi and the DPX-9021MPi. Several specification entries are model-specific and are noted below.

The DPX-6021M does not decode MP3. The manual lists MP3 decoding, to MPEG-1.0 Audio Layer-3, against the DPX-9021MPi only. The MiniDisc transport plays MDLP recordings, with the display lighting separate indicators for LP2 and LP4 material.

Both transports use a GaAlAs double-hetero laser diode at 780 nm. The MiniDisc mechanism runs at 400 -> 900 rpm under constant linear velocity and the CD mechanism at 500 -> 200 rpm. The transport specifications are shared across all three models: the MiniDisc section at 0.005 percent distortion, 93 dB signal-to-noise and 93 dB dynamic range, and the CD section at 0.01 percent distortion, 95 dB signal-to-noise and 95 dB dynamic range with 88 dB stereo separation.

Conversion and equalisation are also common to the family. Third-order delta-sigma converters operate in both directions at 20-bit resolution with 128 times oversampling, and the equaliser provides nine bands centred at 60, 120, 250, 500 Hz and 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 kHz, each adjustable across plus or minus 12 dB in six steps.

Where the DPX-6021M separates from its siblings is output and supplied parts. It is rated at 29W x 4 into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 10 percent THD with a maximum of 47W x 4, against 30W and 50W for the two models above it. Its supplied parts list carries the power harness and mounting hardware only: the remote control, AAA cells, parking sensor relay cord and relay connector are listed for the DPX-9021MPi and DPX-8021Mi only. Mass is listed as 3.3 kg for the group.
