The Kenwood DPX-5200M is a double-DIN receiver combining a MiniDisc transport, a CD transport and an FM/AM tuner in one chassis. Kenwood's own designation on the cover of the owner's manual is デュアルサイズMD/CDレシーバー, placing MD ahead of CD in the model's description. The manual carries publication number B64-2323-00.

The MiniDisc transport reads discs recorded in the MDLP formats as well as standard playback, with separate indicators lighting for LP2 and LP4 material. Discs load behind an operation panel that drops down, with the MD eject control mounted on the rear face of that panel. The CD transport accepts CD and CD-R media. Both transports use a GaAlAs laser diode at 780 nm feeding a 1-bit digital-to-analogue converter with eight times oversampling. The MiniDisc mechanism runs at 400 -> 900 rpm under constant linear velocity and the CD mechanism at 500 -> 200 rpm.

Audio adjustment is divided into two equaliser modes, selected by the EQ item in the Function Set menu. Easy mode offers preset curves arranged by genre. Pro mode exposes a three-band parametric equaliser in which centre frequency, quality factor and level are set independently for each band. Bass centre frequency is selectable at 60, 70, 80, 100 or 150 Hz, with the available options determined by the bass quality factor setting of 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 or 2.0, and a bass extension switch applied separately. The middle band is centred at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 kHz with a quality factor of 1.0 or 2.0. The treble band is centred at 10.0, 12.5, 15.0 or 17.5 kHz. Each band adjusts across plus or minus 12 dB, and three complete Pro curves can be stored and recalled. A separate DSP system provides simulated sound field effects, which the manual notes are unavailable in ALL OFF and traffic information modes, and which require balance and fader to be left centred to operate correctly.

The pre-out is switchable between non-fader, front and rear via the Preout item in Function Set. Disc changer control accepts CD and MD changers, and up to two changers can be connected using the optional KCA-S210A switching unit, which also carries the auxiliary input alongside the CA-C1AX adapter. Name presets store up to 10 disc names in the receiver's own memory and up to 30 station names, though the manual states that name presets cannot be applied to MD or AUX sources.

A traffic information function tunes directly to Japan's road traffic broadcasts, switchable between 1620 kHz, 1629 kHz and 522 kHz, and reachable from any source by holding the control for one second. The manual describes this as a facility for hearing traffic broadcasts quickly while an MD or CD is playing. A security code can be registered through Function Set, after which the receiver will not power on following a reset or a disconnection from the battery until the code is entered. The manual states that once set, the security code cannot be changed, deleted or disabled. Other documented functions include navigation voice muting, an attenuator, automatic aerial support, title and text auto-scroll, and a display dimmer with thirteen steps. No remote control is listed among the supplied parts; the manual directs the owner to the catalogue or the retailer for a compatible unit.
