Kenwood DPX-04

The Kenwood DPX-04 is a double-DIN receiver pairing a cassette deck with a CD transport and an FM/AM tuner. It is documented alongside the DPX-05MD and DPX-05MDB in publication B64-2859-00, with a separate specification page for each. The DPX-04 carries no MiniDisc transport; the cassette deck occupies that position in the range.

The cassette deck runs at 4.76 cm/sec with wow and flutter of 0.1 percent WRMS and a frequency response of 40 Hz -> 20 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB at the 70 microsecond equalisation. Dolby B noise reduction is provided, and the manual quotes signal-to-noise as 50 dB with it off and 60 dB with it on. Dolby C is not listed for this model, unlike the DPX-510 elsewhere in this archive.

The CD transport uses a GaAlAs laser diode running 500 -> 200 rpm under constant linear velocity, feeding a 1-bit digital-to-analogue converter with an eight times oversampling digital filter. Signal-to-noise is quoted at 93 dB at 1 kHz, against 100 dB for the CD transport in the DPX-05MD documented in the same manual.

Output is rated at 30W x 4 into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 10 percent THD, with a maximum of 50W x 4. No pre-out level or impedance is listed in the DPX-04 specification, where the DPX-05MD page quotes 1.8V into 10 kohm. The supplied parts list covers the power harness and mounting hardware only, with no remote control.
